Research Resources

So, it's been a while since I've posted. These are some resources that I find handy when researching Ottoman stuff. These are the top few off the top of my head. I will add more as I find them.

Thesis Archive

This is an archive site of thesis publications from Turkish Universities. Use your browser to translate the page to English and search away. Some papers are in English, many are in Turkish. There are a fascinating variety of topics represented here. I've found papers on Ottoman glass art, instruments of the Ottoman court, surveys of kaftans in the collection at Topkapi palace, Ottoman era banners, etc.

The Rålamb book of costumes

You can find it in several locations, here is one: Rålamb Book of Costumes. | Library of Congress (loc.gov)

This is a small volume by an unidentified Ottoman artist containing 121 miniatures in Indian ink with gouache and some gilding, displaying Turkish officials, occupations and folk types.

Issendai

A very good survey of extant garments and depictions in miniatures.

Turkish Cultural Foundation Image Archive

On the bottom of the page, click on the small rectangle that says "Image Archive". Go through a couple of screens and you will find yourself at the main search page for the image archive. From left to right, there are 4 dropdown boxes. Country, City, Status, and Attribute.

Select from the dropdown boxes from left to right - For example to view the garment collection at Topkapi Palace, first select Country = Turkey. Then select City = Istanbul.

Status is more correctly what museum or collection. Status = Topkapi Palace.

Attribute is more correctly what type of item do you wish to see. Attribute = Costume.

Now you will see what images are from that particular collection.

Here are some resources for Estonian gravefinds:

Not Ottoman, I know, but this is what got me into using horsehair, and what Osman and I first connected over.
