This is the page of Ahmed Mustafa Efendi, a Janissary in service to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Ahmed was recruited as a child in his home village in the Balkans. He currently serves in Istanbul, at the Topkapı Sarayı.

I have been playing in the SCA since the early 90s. My primary persona has been that of Johanna de Bletsho, a minor English noblewoman of the early 14th century.

 

I came across the Facebook group of the Janissary band just before Pennsic 48. Out of idle curiosity, I clicked through to get more information. Before I knew it, I was added to the group. There was a schedule of rehearsals and meetings, links to music to learn, and instructions on garb requirements. I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into, but who doesn't love a good marching band??  I have never had so much fun as being in this group. There was instant camaraderie and friendships across kingdoms. This new interest has become a guiding light in my A&S projects.
